At Clemson University's Warren Lasch Conservation Center, artifacts from the Civil War-era H.L. Hunley submarine had been stored in a lab for years. But heat, humidity, and inconsistent HVAC conditions put those items at risk.
Instead of trying to fix the space, the team took a different approach. Partnering with Patterson Pope, they implemented climate-controlled storage using customized refrigerated containers built to protect everything from delicate textiles to large recovered components.
Now, artifacts are stored in a stable environment designed for long-term preservation, while still allowing easy access for ongoing conservation work.
